The Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment and Minister of Local Government, Rodrigues and Outer Islands, Honourable Jean-François Chaumière met the President and members of the Fire Fighters Union at his office this morning in Port-Louis. This creation of this new trade union within the Government Fire Service (as well as the Prison Service) was made possible thanks to the Employment Relations Act 2008. It is to note that this trade union regroups about 40% of the corps of Government Fire Fighters.
The Fire Fighters Union, seized the opportunity to address several issues and make several requests to the Minister, namely concerning their working equipment, conditions and environment. They also made a request to obtain training from the Ministry in matters of industrial relations, as a newly-created union. The Minister has taken note of their requests and has directed Mr. Jayen Neerunjun, Director of Labour and Industrial Relations at MOLIRE to liaise with the union for this purpose. Minister Chaumière also recommended that the Fire Fighters Union establish their Procedural Agreement as per law, as soon as possible.
The P.A.S of the Ministry of Local Government, Rodrigues and Outer Islands, Mr Parmessur, the Director of Labour and Industrial Relations Mr. Neerunjun and Mr. Farhad Moldeen, President of the Fire Fighters Union were among those who attended the meeting.
