The Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment who is also the current Minister of Local Government, Rodrigues and Outer Islands, Honourable Jean-François Chaumière continues his series of meetings with local authorities. Today, Tuesday 19 January 2010, he met representatives of the Municipal Council of Curepipe (MCC) Curepipe mayor Coomara Payendee and high officials of the Muncipal Council as well as officers of the Ministry of Local Government attended the meeting.
The Minister reviewed the town’s major projects, particularly the renovation of the Curepipe market (bazar) where works – estimated at about Rs 10 million – are expected to be completed soon. Market-sellers should able to shift back there by the 3rd week of February. Minister Chaumière has scheduled a site visit before the shift takes place.
Several ideas were also put forward with respect to hawkers which could be re-settled in the market area, in a space that is currently unused. The municipal officials also announced that upgrading works on the Curepipe Forum would begin in March, including the replacement of various structures (openings, drains etc) as well as the conversion of space available there into an indoor sports area and a commercial market area for non-perishable goods.
Works concerning cleaning of drains, the building of pavements, lanes, footpaths and bus-shelters were also reviewed by the Minister. The Council also informed Hon. Chaumière that the Bigara cemetery would be extended over an area of 5 arpents of land.
The projects are jointly funded by the MCC, the Local Infrastructure Fund and funds made available under the Additional Stimulus Package.

MINISTER CHAUMIÈRE MEETS THE FIRE FIGHTERS UNION
The Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment and Minister of Local Government, Rodrigues and Outer Islands, Honourable Jean-François Chaumière met the President and members of the Fire Fighters Union at his office this morning in Port-Louis. This creation of this new trade union within the Government Fire Service (as well as the Prison Service) was made possible thanks to the Employment Relations Act 2008. It is to note that this trade union regroups about 40% of the corps of Government Fire Fighters.
The Fire Fighters Union, seized the opportunity to address several issues and make several requests to the Minister, namely concerning their working equipment, conditions and environment. They also made a request to obtain training from the Ministry in matters of industrial relations, as a newly-created union. The Minister has taken note of their requests and has directed Mr. Jayen Neerunjun, Director of Labour and Industrial Relations at MOLIRE to liaise with the union for this purpose. Minister Chaumière also recommended that the Fire Fighters Union establish their Procedural Agreement as per law, as soon as possible.

SOLIDARITY HAITI - TELEDON ON WEDNESDAY 27 JANUARY 2010
In the course of the last cabinet meeting on Friday 15 January 2010, Cabinet decided to donate $ 500 000 or Rs 15 million to the people and government of disaster-struck Haiti.
Government has therefore decided to extend its help through the organisation of a major national event: TELEDON so that companies and individuals can come forward and make donations to help Haiti. Minister Jean-François Chaumière is chairing the committee which includes Minister Asraf Dulull and the Attorney General, Rama Valayden. The event is set to kick off at 10 a.m. next Wednesday and will last until 10 p.m. The Prime Minister, Dr. The Honourable Navinchandra Ramgoolam will be launching the Teledon, and is expected to make his personal contribution to the fund at this occasion.
MBC television and radio as well as all private radios and the press have been enlisted to support this event to help make Mauritians aware of the need to support Haiti and make their concrete contributions to the fund.
